Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the dental caries, periodontitis and oral health behaviors of some postpartum women in a bid to seek out ways of promoting the oral health of women delivered of children and of improving their oral health care. The subjects in this study were 81 women who gave birth to babies between November 2005 and January 2006 in obstetrics and gynecologists in Busan and were in the middle of recovering from it at postpartum care centers.

Methods: Self-administered questionnaires were utilized to assess their oral health behaviors including the frequency and method of toothbrushing, the intensity of the bristles of toothbrushes in use, the use of auxiliary dental hygiene supplies, the presence or absence of gingival bleeding in times of toothbrushing and gingival pain.

Results: The DMFT index of the women investigated was a mean of 7.78k2.36, and their Active D index was 2.17k2.14 on the average. Their periodontal pocket was a mean of 4.03 f 0.71 mm in depth. Whether they had their teeth scaled during pregnancy and whether they used auxiliary oral hygiene supplies made a significant difference(p ( 0.05). Twenty-seven percent had their teeth scaled for the purpose of prevention, and like the group of women receiving dental treatment during pregnancy.

Conclusions: Some postpartum women¡¯ s periodontal pocket was less deep than that of the others who hadn¡¯ t, and the forrnei s Active D index was smaller than that of the latter as well. Moreover, the gingival bleeding and gingival pain of the former were less than those of the latter. The average gingival bleeding rate stood at 75.3 percent, and that of gingival pain was 54.3 percent. The gingival pain rate varied significantly with toothbrushing method.
